Semantic Web Pipes

Semantic Web Pipes

The presentation about the Semantic Web Pipes from DERI in the WWW 2008 conference, developers track was very impressive. It is based on the idea of yahoo pipes of mixing and channeling data through operators, but for semantically structured data which offers more powerful operations. It also offers impressive GUI for handling the pipes though not as beautiful as yahoo pipes GUI. Sometime ago I had also presented similar idea of Semantic Web pipes for SocioBiblog, a semantic blogging system for decentralized flow of bibliographic information in communities. However, it only had limited operations of mixing feeds and filtering by metadata elements.

Linked data browsers

Recently, I was playing with several linked data browsers to view data from StYLiD. Amazing to see so many data browsers available today 🙂

There are also many RDF visualization tools like

…. and so on. Wow! what an impressive list. Please add to it if I missed some.

However, I do not think that these generic RDF or linked data browsers will be useful or usable for general users, who do not know what is RDF or Semantic Web. The user will get lost in the complex data network, with lot of wanted and unwanted data, shown monotonously. I feel that it would be better to hide all this data network from the user and rather provide them useful functionalities or present only some useful data in user friendly way.

Intel® Mash Maker: Mashups for the Masses

Intel® Mash Maker: Mashups for the Masses

Great work. This is similar to the Piggy Bank/ Solvent project. However, it is more advanced and the browser automatically suggests appropriate mashup scrapers. The public mass can create wrappers for different types of web pages and make the browser intelligent collaboratively so that the browser will gradually understand the data in pages. This is aimed at slowly turning the current web into a Semantic Web using wisdom of the mass. But surely there are many difficulties due to the various unpredictable forms of structured and unstructured data in the current web.

Blogs, WordPress, Zitgist and the Semantic Web

Blogs, WordPress, Zitgist and the Semantic Web at Frederick Giasson’s Weblog

This is a cool thing for using Semantic Web with blogs implemented using Zitgist technologies. I would like to know how it works. It is also somewhat similar to my idea of semantic navigation through blog entries.

Storing and Using RDF in Mulgara

Here is another RDF store. The author nicely explains how relational database doesn’t always  satisfy dynamic and evolving practical scenarios for sharing data on the web.

I had recently started using Pligg for my research. I hope I can still continue using it even after someone buys it. It has a lot of features and has a large user base that makes it luring.
